Murder-Suicide of Elderly Resident and His Wife inside Pennsylvania Nursing Home:

A Pennsylvania nursing home resident has died after shooting his wife and turning the gun on himself inside the facility, says an NBC Philadelphia article. In late October at the Manatawny Manor Nursing Home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, a 90-year-old man and his 89-year-old wife died from their gunshot wounds in an apparent murder-suicide inside the home.

According to investigators, the wife was in her room when her husband appeared with a gun and fatally shot her. The man then put the gun to his head and shot himself. Despite being rushed to nearby Reading Hospital, the man died from his wounds. As the gun was recovered from the scene, no threat currently exists for residents or the public. And while another resident was present for the shootings, this person did not sustain any physical harm during the incident.

While the aforementioned tragic incident has been ruled a murder-suicide, the question may remain as to whether nursing home malpractice might have played a part. When one resident causes the death of another, and the nursing home has failed to prevent it, nursing home malpractice has occurred and a wrongful death attorney needs to be contacted.

The responsibility lies with nursing homes to sufficiently monitor and supervise its residents in order to preserve their safety. Failure to do so equates to nursing home malpractice.
