Two Nursing Home Workers Attack Resident in New Jersey Facility, Causing Critical Injury:
In a brutal example of nursing home malpractice, a New Jersey nursing home resident was attacked and critically wounded by two nursing home workers, reports a 6abc article.
According to the article, an incident at Ocean County’s Crystal Lake Rehabilitation Facility involving two certified nursing assistants and a 52-year-old male patient occurred late morning on October 14. Called to the facility by Crystal Lake staff, police discovered that Dhenmark Francisco, 28, of Toms River, and Jovi Esperanza, 31, of Beachwood, had assaulted the man in their care.
The victim was rushed to Community Medical Center, and later transferred to New Brunswick’s Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, where he was deemed to be in critical, but stable, condition.
Both men were arrested the day after the incident of nursing home malpractice; on October 18 prosecutors announced that Francisco and Esperanza have both charged with aggravated assault. No details related to the motivation for the attack were given.
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) in nursing homes work to support registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in the basic care of residents, from helping with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and using the toilet to repositioning and transporting residents in and out of beds and wheelchairs. CNAs also assist with such medical procedures as taking vital signs or preparing medical instruments for nurses; they furthermore make reports and logs, complete forms, and keep records. A CNA is meant to ensure the safety and comfort of residents is upheld by following protocols. If a CNA attacks a resident and causes bodily harm, nursing home malpractice has occurred.
Staff-on-resident assault demonstrates nursing home malpractice in the form of physical nursing home abuse. Such abuse involves deliberate physical action against a nursing home resident and can include the following:
- Hitting
- Kicking
- Shoving
- Hair pulling
- And more
A loved one residing in a nursing home should be monitored for any signs that staff-on-resident assault (or even resident-on-resident assault) may have occurred. Typical warning signs for this type of nursing home malpractice include the following:
- Unexplained bruises
- Scratches
- Bone fractures
- Burns
- Uncharacteristic displays of anger, depression, or violence
It is important to be vigilant; undetected nursing home abuse can lead to serious injury or even death, necessitating the involvement of a wrongful death attorney. Should you have any questions or concerns about abuse, neglect, or any type of nursing home malpractice, you should immediately contact a nursing home malpractice or wrongful death attorney.
